Sydney and Dubai Make Biggest Strides in Fashion Industry

SYDNEY - The world of fashion is generally dominated by five New York, Paris, Rome, London and Milan, but B-list players like Dubai and Sydney are coming on strong, according to an annual survey of top fashion cities. The list was compiled by the Global Language Monitor, a non-profit group that tracks the frequency of words and phrases in the media, on the web and throughout the blogosphere.

New York led the list in the year 2008 for the 5th consecutive year with Rome retaining the second, Paris third again but Milan overtaking London for the fourth place. London came 5th. But more surprising was the rise of some smaller fashion centres, with Sydney moving from 12th position to 7th in the list and Dubai moving up 12 spots to No. 12.

Among the newbies, New Delhi broke into the top 25 at No. 24 and Madrid ended up as 15th. Stockholm in Sweden was also new and the only Nordic city on the list, while Cape Town in South Africa also made in. Tokyo remained the capital of the Asian fashion industry as 10th in the list but slipped from 6th position a year ago and was now being challenged by Hong Kong just one slot behind. Sao Paolo and Bangkok dropped off the list.

"Our yearly rankings clearly reinforce recent trends: the Big Five (New York, Rome, Paris, Milan, and London), far and away dominate the world of fashion, especially in the eyes of the print and electronic media, as well as on the Internet," said Millie Lorenzo Payack, a director at the Global Language Monitor. "At the same time, the second tier of the cities in the world fashion rankings are coming on strong. And, by the way, money spent on media outreach can, indeed, make a difference; witness Dubai."

Fashion Wave Hits Wimbledon

Fashion is making waves on runways in Milan and tennis courts at Wimbledon. Pin-up tennis girl Maria Sharapova made paparazzi snapping as she made her appearance at the Grand Slam wearing tuxedo bib top shorts instead of that usual skirt. Sharapova walked over the court in a cream colored tuxedo style jacket and long trousers.

Her fashion ploy followed Monday's matches of American Serena Williams and Switzerland's Roger Federer, who doffed his 2 year old cream blazer in favor of a pale herringbone cardigan by Nike. "We've been talking about what we could do," said Federer. "I thought 2 jackets were enough; let's move on to something a little bit different."

Serena Williams turned up wearing a white trench coat over her tennis dress. "It is definitely not athletic attire," she said. "But it is ladylike and I am very ladylike. It goes perfectly with my personality and everything else."

Fashion Show for School Uniforms

This September, all Students of Springfield will be wearing uniforms while many aren't happy about the new policy, but many students are slowly starting to like the idea, thanks to a fashion show! Staff and students at the High School of Science and Technology put on a fashion show to give students a peep of the different styles they get to choose from.

"I think it's important to have it because many of the students don't understand the policy and many of them didn't want to do it. It's important to understand what this policy is about and how will it affect them," says teacher, Gladys Franco. From shorts to pants, long sleeve shirts, to polo's, students were shown ways to dress up their uniforms and make it their own, all at a small price!

"You can wear shoes, have your hair and makeup the way you want it and it's cheap" says teacher Lissa Asta-Ferrero. So far students are starting to get excited about the change. "It was exciting, the uniforms are better than I thought, they were more fashionable" says Matthew Oquendo, a student.

Zimbabwe: Fashion Designers Set to Show off Their Garments

Most progressive designers from Zimbabwe will have their clothing exhibited at the ongoing Harare International Festival of the Arts. Dubbed the Fashion Factory Statement -- the rare show that is part of Hifa 2008, aims to bring together designers and festival goers who will be exchanging notes at the Global Quarter's Fashion Studio. Ethno-Design, under the directorship of Novell Zwangendaba is one of the main organizers of the designers' workshop. Novell, who organized last year's fashion, urged all designers to fully utilize Hifa 2008 to market their wares. The dreadlocked designer said they expected some tertiary students majoring in Cutting and Design and related fields as well as independent designers to grace the event. Among the list of designers gracing this event would be Chidochemoyo Nemhara who made headlines at last year's EDFW-a designer's forum.

A 20 year old designer couldn’t hide her excitement after being taken in for Hifa 2008. "I am glad for being included in this year's Hifa. For your own information, I will be going there for the first time and I wish to fully utilize the fest to market my wares. "I am also happy to grace the festival doing something unlike visiting stands a patron," she said. Even Novell spoke highly of Nemhara whom he described as a creative genius destined for the stars. "She is good. She has shown us a lot of potential at last and I hope she will have a chance to show the world some of her outstanding garments when the event springs into life," she said. Other designers expected to grace the event include Tendai Manuel who will be promoting his label named Sword. Ester Mujuru, who specializes in sculpture designs will have her wares displayed along with Tawanda Zawanda of Limit X among others.
