Season after season, Marc Jacobs (born New York, 1963), manages to predict precisely what women all in excess of the world want to wear, whether that be his super-flat 'mouse' pumps, Sergeant Pepper-style denim jackets or 'Venetia' handbags fixed with big silver buckles. Born in New York's Upper West Side to parents who both worked for the William Morris organization, Jacobs was raised by his fashion-conscious grandmother. As an adolescent, Jacobs engrossed himself in club culture, observing the beautiful people at the Mudd Club, Studio 54 and Hurrah. Nowadays, Jacobs' most fruitful source of motivation is still the crowd of cool girls that enclose him. After high school, Jacobs finished a fashion degree at Parsons School of Design; his graduation collection (1984), which featured brightly-coloured knits, fixed the eye of Robert Duffy, and decision-making who remains Jacobs' business partner to this day. Together they launched the first Marc Jacobs collection (1986), charming a CFDA award (the first of six, to date) the following year. During 1989 Jacobs was named head designer at Perry Ellis. His experience there was emotional and his infamous 'grunge' collection of 1993 - featuring satin Birkenstocks and silk plaid shirts - noticeable his exit from the company. By 1997 Jacobs' star was in the rising once again, when LVMH selected him artistic director at Louis Vuitton.
